Ukraine's Supreme Court has upheld the conviction of a mother who deliberately injured her three-year-old son to receive social welfare payments. The woman was sentenced to over seven years in prison for using a medical needle to damage her son's eyeball, which caused the boy to lose sight in one eye. According to the Office of the Prosecutor General, the woman waited until she was alone with the child before intentionally harming him. The court also ordered her to pay 600,000 hryvnias in moral damages to the child and granted a claim for compensation of medical treatment costs. Since the mother was unemployed and relied on state benefits, she had calculated that her son's disability would secure her a continued income stream.

Deputy Prosecutor General Viktor Logachov noted that the child will have to live with the consequences of this trauma for the rest of his life.
