Ukraine's Spring Planting Season Delayed by Deep Soil Frost

Spring Sowing Campaign Underway in Ukraine

Ukraine's spring sowing campaign has commenced, but field work in most regions is expected to start later than the average for recent years. The delay is due to deeper soil frost and a longer-lasting snow cover in some areas. Deputy Minister of Economy, Environment, and Agriculture Taras Vysotskyi noted that farmers have stockpiled essential resources for the spring planting season sufficient for at least several weeks, and often for several months. This is crucial because agricultural production has a long cycle, and a single annual harvest requires meticulous advance preparation. Fuel for field operations has also been procured in advance, so no resource shortages are currently observed at the start of sowing. Ukraine is a major global supplier of grains and oilseeds, making the timing of its planting season significant for international markets.

Regional Patterns and Crop Outlook

Traditionally, the sowing campaign begins in southern regions such as Mykolaiv, Odesa, and Dnipropetrovsk oblasts. The area sown with spring crops in 2026 is not expected to change significantly and will remain roughly at last year's level. Most winter crops have successfully overwintered, though some oblasts have experienced losses. In most regions, winter crop losses do not exceed 3–5%. However, Kirovohrad Oblast may see losses of 30–40% of winter sowings, Vinnytsia Oblast up to 20–30%, and Dnipropetrovsk, Poltava, and Cherkasy oblasts up to 10–20%.

Taras Vysotskyi emphasized that even in regions with higher losses, this does not threaten farm operations, as winter crops typically account for only 20–30% of the total sown area structure.

When recalculated for total production volume, the losses will be considerably smaller. Thus, although Ukraine's spring sowing campaign has begun with certain challenges, farmers are prepared for field work and possess the necessary resources. A successful campaign is vital for the country's food security and economic stability, particularly given the agricultural sector's key role in the national economy and its contribution to global food supplies.
