From Combat to Veterans Policy: The Journey of Oleksandr Stasiuk from Rivne Region
Oleksandr Stasiuk now serves as an assistant to the head of the Main Directorate of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in the Rivne region, focusing on veterans policy. His path to this role began in 2014 when he volunteered to fight on the front lines—a decision that marked the start of his dedicated service to the country. After returning from combat, he taught history and law at a Ukrainian school in Spain. However, when Russia launched its full-scale invasion in 2022, he re-enlisted for military duty.
Stasiuk carried out combat missions as part of the 104th Separate Territorial Defense Brigade. His service, however, was not without hardship. In November 2024, he was severely wounded after stepping on an explosive device, requiring seven complex surgeries to save his life.

Despite these challenges, Stasiuk continues working for the benefit of veterans. He believes that “everyone must do their part. The home front is just as important. And respect for the military is also a front line.” His experience—both as a soldier and now as an assistant to the head of the State Emergency Service—makes him a key figure in shaping Ukraine’s veterans policy.
Stasiuk’s story highlights the critical need for supporting veterans and recognizing their contributions to society, especially during wartime. His journey from service to advocacy underscores the importance of a comprehensive approach to veterans policy—one that includes not only military aspects but also social support and education. Such a policy can strengthen the bond between the military and civilian population, fostering national identity and patriotism in Ukraine.
