Reintegrating Veterans into Civilian Jobs: A Company Initiative

DTEK has launched a program designed to help veterans of the Russian-Ukrainian war transition back into civilian employment, including those with disabilities resulting from combat injuries. Hundreds of DTEK miners joined the Defense Forces when the full-scale invasion began. As part of this effort, the company established a dedicated veteran support program that focuses on workplace modifications and testing specialized adaptive workwear.

Dmytro’s Story: From the Frontline Back to the Mine

Dmytro, a veteran who worked as a drift miner and mining foreman at the mine since 2018, suffered a severe injury during a combat mission and lost a limb. After completing rehabilitation, he was able to return to DTEK in an administrative role. Dmytro emphasizes how having a job has been crucial to rebuilding his life:

“When many people return to civilian life, they think: Now I’ll be useless to anyone. Honestly, I had some similar thoughts while I was still in treatment. But my wife played a huge role—it’s so important to have someone like that by your side. And of course, it’s extremely important that I have a job again. It’s not just about the money; there’s constant interaction, a team, and everyone treats each other with respect. The mine, you could say, saved me from loneliness. I can’t imagine just lying at home staring at the ceiling all this time.”

DTEK has also created a barrier-free environment at one of its mine sites, improving conditions for returning veterans. The company has been recognized for having one of the best veteran support programs, underscoring its commitment to helping with employment and reintegration. As part of the initiative, DTEK produces adaptive workwear for veterans with disabilities, further easing their transition back into the workforce.

These veteran support efforts by DTEK represent a significant step in restoring social engagement and integrating former soldiers into civilian life. Such programs not only improve working conditions but also help boost the morale of veterans who might otherwise feel isolated after the war. Corporate involvement in these initiatives highlights the importance of business responsibility in providing social support to employees, especially in the aftermath of conflict.

As DTEK continues to enhance its support for veterans, it's worth noting that other companies are also making strides in this area. For instance, Metinvest has successfully reintegrated a significant percentage of veterans into the workforce, showcasing their unique approach to supporting those who have served. This highlights a growing commitment across industries to provide meaningful employment opportunities for veterans returning to civilian life.
