The Situation in Kyiv
Tamara Muzheiko and her son Andrii, a war veteran with a Group II disability, face a dire predicament in their Kyiv apartment at 6-A, Lytovskyi Avenue, apartment 148. Their home has become so filled with refuse that they are now living in the building's common hallway. Neighbors have repeatedly complained about the unsanitary conditions, which pose a serious fire hazard and create an unacceptable living environment. Despite public appeals to the authorities and numerous official complaints, the situation remains unresolved.
Andrii Muzheiko, who suffers from multiple concussions and has lost a lower limb, lives with his mother under these dangerous conditions. Their own apartment is packed with trash, causing alarm among other residents. The neighbors have sent appeals to the Obolon District State Administration, social services, and the police in an attempt to draw attention to the crisis. However, these efforts have so far yielded no results.
Appeals to the Authorities
Public activist Oleksii Shevchuk highlighted the situation, stating,
"This is an egregious case: a war veteran needs social and medical support, and the building requires immediate clearance of tons of trash that threatens the safety of hundreds of people."
Neighbors have also expressed concern over threats reportedly made by Andrii Muzheiko. According to one neighbor, he spoke of intending to detonate a grenade in response to requests to clean up the waste.
This case has sparked public outrage. The Council of Residents of Obolon Buildings (RМBO) has formally appealed to the Kyiv City State Administration and the Council on Veterans' Affairs at the Obolon District Administration. In a similar incident at 47/1 Enthusiastiv Street, authorities removed 7 tons of waste from an apartment. Neighbors and activists hope for a swift resolution, as the situation demands urgent intervention. This incident underscores the critical challenges faced by veterans and persons with disabilities in urban settings, where social safety nets can sometimes fail. It highlights the ongoing need for effective coordination between communities and government agencies to ensure dignified living conditions for all citizens.
