Strike on Dnipro

In the early hours of May 18, 2026, Russian forces launched a major assault on the city of Dnipro, causing widespread destruction and multiple casualties. The bombardment lasted over six hours and involved drones, Shahed munitions, and missiles. Around 2:30 a.m., rockets struck a residential area, injuring 18 people, including a 2-year-old girl and a 10-year-old boy. Eight victims were hospitalized, with their conditions listed as moderate.

The attack began on the evening of May 17 and continued into the night of May 18, damaging roughly 20 structures, such as:

  • apartment buildings
  • private homes
  • two kindergartens
  • a gymnasium
  • a mosque
  • a university building
  • a tram

Amid this tragedy, a veteran from Mariupol named Oleksandr emerged as a hero. Having served in combat since 2022, he was discharged two years ago due to injuries sustained in battle. Despite his own limitations, he did not hesitate to act when disaster struck.

Oleksandr saved two women—Liudmyla and her daughter—who were trapped inside a burning apartment. One of the women was unable to move after suffering a stroke, which made the rescue especially difficult. Oleksandr recounted:

“We got them to the third floor, where the fire was. We couldn’t go any higher because of carbon monoxide and smoke. The rescuers told us we couldn’t proceed until the third floor was put out.”

Liudmyla expressed her gratitude for the rescue: “They barely pulled us out because they couldn’t find us. I called out to a man, and he started searching the neighbors. He came in, carried my daughter out, and took us to the hospital. I’m thankful he heard us. He used a crowbar to break the door and dragged us out. That we are whole, that we are healthy, that we are alive.”

After the rescue, Oleksandr himself suffered carbon monoxide poisoning and sought medical treatment the following day.

This tragedy highlights not only the devastating impact of war on civilians but also the heroism of individuals who, despite personal risks, are willing to help others in desperate times. Numerous accounts of rescue and self-sacrifice during shelling underscore the immense challenges faced by Ukraine’s population amid the conflict. The events in Dnipro demonstrate the critical need to support humanitarian efforts and ensure civilian safety in conflict zones.

As the situation in Dnipro continues to unfold, the impact of the recent attacks has left many residents in peril. In a related incident, reports indicate that the number of injured has risen, with children among the victims.
