Ukrainian Pétanque Championship Held in Lviv
From July 24 to 26, 2026, the Ukrainian Pétanque Championship took place in Lviv’s Stryiskyi Park, drawing more than 100 competitors from across the country—including Kharkiv, Kyiv, Irpin, Kovel, Uzhhorod, Mukachevo, and other cities. This edition was groundbreaking: for the first time, veterans of the Russo-Ukrainian war and individuals with hearing impairments took part in the national championship.
Liliya Lytvyn, president of the Pétanque Federation of Ukraine, remarked: “In total, we have over 100 participants, among them veterans of the Russo-Ukrainian war and people with hearing loss. This is the first time they have competed in a Ukrainian championship. We are very proud to be able to involve different segments of the population, who compete against each other on equal terms.”
The men’s teams were vying for the chance to represent Ukraine at the world championship, as this tournament served as a qualifier. For women, the results will be factored into the ranking that determines the national team roster. Pétanque, a traditional French game akin to boules, has been steadily growing in Ukraine, particularly as a rehabilitation activity for those affected by the war.
Participants Share Their Experiences
Among the athletes was Viktoriia from Kharkiv, who shared her thoughts: “What I love about pétanque is that you’re constantly moving, talking, and enjoying the game. And when you win—it’s an incredible feeling. During the war, this is very important for me… pétanque has become a kind of rehabilitation, just like it has for many other people.”
Another notable participant was veteran Ivan Drozd from Stryi, who has been playing pétanque for about eight months. After suffering profound losses—his 20-year-old son was killed in the war—Ivan underwent rehabilitation at the Unbroken center. He said: “Sports help me keep going. My 20-year-old son died in the war. After such a loss, it was extremely hard. I started running, meeting up with my brothers-in-arms, and doing sports. Now I run both for myself and for my son.”
This championship highlights the role of sport as a tool for social integration and recovery, especially for veterans and people with disabilities. The event created a platform for shared experiences and mutual support, which can help reduce social isolation and improve emotional well-being. Seeing veterans warmly welcomed and actively participating demonstrates that sport can be a vital element in healing after severe trauma and loss.
