KNU Shevchenko Rector Election Rescheduled from May to October

Перенесення виборів ректора КНУ ім. Шевченка на жовтень замість травня.

Rector Election Date Shifted

Ukraine's Ministry of Education and Science has moved the election for the rector of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv from May 11, 2026, to October 27, 2026. This adjustment follows a formal request from the university's organizing committee, which identified technical and procedural inconsistencies needing resolution before the vote could proceed.

According to the Ministry, the committee flagged several issues, including conflicts between the university's internal regulations that require revision and approval by the Academic Council. Additionally, there were concerns about inadequate material and technical preparations for the election, a lack of proper facilities for precinct electoral commissions, and failure to meet security requirements during the organization of the electoral process.

Election Preparations Underway

The competition for the rector position at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv was announced on March 2, 2026. Currently, Valeriy Kopiyka is serving as acting head of the institution, following the Ministry of Education's dismissal of former rector Volodymyr Buhrov on April 29 due to the expiration of his contract.

Preparations for the election are ongoing, with the university working to address the identified shortcomings to ensure a properly organized vote.

The postponement underscores the critical importance of adhering to procedural norms and thorough preparation to guarantee the legitimacy of the election process. The university must take corrective action to resolve the identified issues and ensure the election meets established standards. This situation also highlights the need for robust electoral organization within Ukraine's higher education institutions.

The recent decision to postpone the rector election at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv comes in the wake of significant administrative changes, including the dismissal of former rector Buhrov. This development not only reflects ongoing controversies but also emphasizes the need for a stable leadership transition during this critical period for the university.
