Explosion Shakes El Fargue Site
On October 30, an explosion occurred at the El Fargue facility, located near Granada and owned by the Slovak MSM Group, during a scheduled test. The blast injured between two and three workers. The incident took place around 9:00 AM in a designated area for powder burning, which was cordoned off and clear of other personnel at the time.
According to Spain's National Police, two of the injured sustained mild hearing damage, while the UGT labor union reported three casualties. Following the explosion, the plant was closed for the rest of the workday as a precaution. El Fargue employs approximately 300 people and specializes in manufacturing various caliber munitions and rocket components destined for Ukraine, a focus that intensified after Russia's full-scale invasion began.
Safety Measures and Investigation Underway
Workers at the site undergo daily inspections, and carrying mobile phones inside is strictly prohibited. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the explosion, considering multiple possibilities, including the potential of intentional arson.
This event adds to a recent pattern of incidents involving explosions at military industrial facilities in the region. For instance, on September 12, a weapons depot near the Bulgarian village of Tsareva Levada exploded without injuries. Earlier in March, a fire broke out at the LPP Holding industrial complex in Pardubice, Czech Republic, a company that produces drones for Ukraine. Additionally, a series of blasts at the EMKO munitions plant near Tryavna led to the evacuation of about 300 people, though no casualties were reported.
The El Fargue factory remains closed until the investigation concludes, and further details about the explosion continue to emerge.
This incident at El Fargue highlights the inherent dangers of ammunition production, especially amid escalating regional tensions. Explosions at military manufacturing sites carry not only local but also broader geopolitical implications, given the critical role these facilities play in supplying arms to Ukraine. Thorough investigation and review of such events across Europe are essential steps toward enhancing safety protocols at these sensitive locations in the future.
