Deadly Explosion Rocks Rivne Police Administrative Building
On 31 August 2026, 47-year-old police lieutenant colonel Mykola Omelchuk was killed in the courtyard of Police Station No. 1 in Rivne. The detonation occurred at approximately 15:30 while bomb-disposal officers were on duty, and three of his colleagues in the same unit were wounded. Ukrainian bomb-disposal specialists have also been tasked with clearing explosives from territories liberated from Russian forces.
Omelchuk had worked as an explosives technician for more than 25 years. He began his career at the NDEKC as a sapper technician and eventually became deputy director and head of the explosive safety department within the explosives technical service directorate of the Main Directorate of the National Police in Rivne Oblast. He was also a member of the National Police's joint explosives experts team, taking part in four deployments to clear landmines and other ordnance in de-occupied parts of Ukraine. He is survived by his wife, two daughters aged 21 and 17, and a five-year-old son.
