Blast Rocks Military Garrison in Khabarovsk
An explosion occurred on April 28 in the village of Knyaze-Volkonskoye-1, Khabarovsk Krai, within a military garrison. The target was Major General Azatbek Omurbekov, who commanded Russian forces during the occupation of Bucha. The bomb was placed in a mailbox on the stairwell of building No. 55. The blast killed Lieutenant Colonel Kuzmenko, a battalion commander of the training communications unit, and wounded several others. Omurbekov's condition remains unknown, and Russian authorities have classified the incident.
Azatbek Omurbekov's Background
Since 2023, Azatbek Omurbekov has led the 392nd District Training Center for Junior Specialists of the Eastern Military District. In 2022, he commanded the 64th Separate Motor Rifle Brigade (military unit 51460), which was stationed in Bucha during the city's occupation in March 2022. For his actions, Omurbekov was awarded the title of Hero of the Russian Federation by Vladimir Putin in July 2022. His brigade also received the Guards designation, and he was promoted from colonel to major general.
In both 2023 and 2024, Omurbekov personally led a column of military vehicles during the May 9 parade in Khabarovsk. However, he is under sanctions from the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Canada, Switzerland, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand. In November 2023, the U.S. State Department added Omurbekov to its sanctions list for extrajudicial killings of civilians in Andriivka, Donetsk region.
As of March 2025, over 2,500 Russian military personnel have been identified as involved in the killings of civilians in the Bucha district, where more than 1,000 civilians were killed during the occupation, including around 650 who were executed by Russian forces.
The U.S. State Department noted that during the occupation of the Bucha district, Russian forces 'killed, beat, dismembered, burned civilians, and staged executions.'
