Escalation in the Donetsk Region
A series of explosions and drone attacks have been recorded in the temporarily occupied areas of Donetsk Oblast, particularly in Mariupol and Donetsk city. These strikes have caused fires, damaged energy infrastructure, and targeted military facilities. On May 28, powerful blasts shook Mariupol, according to Petro Andriushchenko, head of the Center for the Study of Occupation. Following the explosions, a fire broke out in one district, likely hitting military assets belonging to the Russian occupation forces.
Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Assaults
Both Mariupol and Donetsk came under drone attack on the night of May 22. In Nikolske, a substation was hit, leaving parts of the Mariupol district and several neighborhoods in Mariupol itself without electricity. Another series of explosions occurred on the evening of January 18 in the occupied territories of Donetsk Oblast. Russian sources claimed a massive drone assault and the activation of air defense systems. The main thrust of the January 18 attack targeted energy infrastructure, cutting off power to the Kirovsky and Kuibyshevsky districts of Donetsk.
Additional drone strikes took place on the night of January 14, with blasts reported in Donetsk and Makiivka. The following night, January 13, Mariupol experienced a complete blackout after a drone attack.
“A fire erupted in Mariupol near the Donetsk highway. Preliminary reports indicate a substation is burning in the Kalmius district. Additionally, occupier bases at the Ilyich Iron and Steel Works may have been hit. Sounds of detonation are audible,” stated Petro Andriushchenko.Across occupied Donetsk, many areas are now grappling with power outages.
The situation in the temporarily occupied parts of Donetsk Oblast remains tense, with relentless strikes on energy grids and military installations. These events signal an intensification of hostilities, posing severe risks to civilians, including electricity blackouts and threats to life. It is important to note that these attacks are occurring amid rising regional tensions, which could shape the conflict's trajectory and impact the broader situation in Ukraine.
In light of the recent surge in drone attacks, including a notable incident on May 27, the situation in Donetsk continues to evolve. These ongoing assaults not only exacerbate the humanitarian crisis but also highlight the strategic importance of energy infrastructure in the region.
