Explosions Rock Occupied Donetsk, Disrupting Power and Destroying Drones

Сильні вибухи підривають життєдіяльність в окупованому Донбасі, призводячи до відключення електрики та пошкодження безпілотників.

Explosions Reported in Donetsk on March 8, 2026

A series of powerful explosions struck the temporarily occupied city of Donetsk and surrounding areas, including Makiivka, Horlivka, and Yenakiieve, on March 8, 2026. Preliminary reports indicate the target was a warehouse storing Iranian-made Shahed (Geran-2) attack drones. The blasts caused significant damage to the local power grid, leading to widespread electricity outages across parts of Donetsk, Makiivka, Horlivka, and Yenakiieve.

Emergency services and ambulances are currently on the scene. The explosions were accompanied by a massive column of smoke rising into the sky. As noted by Hlavkom,

"It is loud in occupied Donetsk. Following the impact, a huge column of smoke is rising into the sky. Preliminary information suggests a storage warehouse for Geran-2 UAVs was attacked."

Context of the Incident

This event follows a Ukrainian Defense Forces missile strike on the territory of Donetsk Airport the previous day, March 7. That strike targeted an area used for storing, preparing for launch, and controlling Shahed-type attack drones. The attack resulted in a large-scale fire and secondary detonations, which are considered the likely cause of the subsequent explosions on March 8.

The situation in the region remains tense, as repeated strikes point to an intensification of combat operations. These attacks on weapons depots are a strategic effort to degrade enemy capabilities for future military actions. The ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine has seen frequent use of such drones against civilian infrastructure. Meanwhile, the severe damage to critical infrastructure, particularly the power outages, is likely to further impact the civilian population already suffering from the consequences of the war.
