JD Vance's Perspective on the Ukraine Conflict
US Vice President JD Vance believes Russia is gaining less and less from its offensive operations in Ukraine, which could pave the way for a negotiated settlement to the war. In an interview with The Sunday Times, Vance argued that Ukraine's 2023 counteroffensive was a strategic and tactical disaster. He stressed that Ukraine should adopt a defensive posture, which he sees as a more effective approach.
'If you recall, in the summer of 2023, the main debate was whether Ukraine should launch a large-scale counteroffensive. Nearly the entire Western world, including President Biden, pushed the Ukrainians toward that massive counteroffensive. And looking back, it was a strategic and tactical catastrophe,' said JD Vance.
He also pointed out that a defensive stance allows Ukraine to leverage its tactical advantages more effectively.
Vance added that Russia pays a steep price for every new kilometer of territory it gains, and the potential benefits from continuing its offensive operations are 'extremely small—approaching zero.'
'This could well create the space we need to bring this matter to a close,' he stated.
The Vice President also noted that the United States and NATO encouraged Ukraine to focus on defense, which has proven effective.

Additionally, on June 25, Volodymyr Zelensky announced a new wave of drone strikes aimed at pushing the Kremlin toward peace talks.
