On September 5, 2025, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held a meeting with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico. During the talks, key aspects of bilateral relations and European security were discussed.
Zelensky reported that 'Slovakia supports Ukraine in its movement towards the European Union. This is very significant.'
During the meeting, the Ukrainian leader also informed Fico about his communication with President Trump and his work with coalition leaders to ensure peace and security in Ukraine. Special attention was focused on the issues of energy independence in Europe, where Zelensky emphasized that 'there is no future for Russian oil, just as there is none for Russian gas.'
Fico, in turn, stressed the importance of cooperation between the countries and expressed a desire to develop friendly relations, acknowledging the existence of differing views.
An important outcome of the negotiations was Slovakia's readiness to join the 'shelter coalition' and to provide Ukraine with expertise regarding European Union accession. In the energy sector, both sides agreed on joint projects to ensure energy stability.
In terms of security, Fico explained that although Slovakia cannot participate in guaranteeing security as a separate country, they support various initiatives, including the president's peace formula. Zelensky concluded the meeting by emphasizing the importance of dialogue between the countries and stated that this dialogue would continue.
