From the Battlefield to the Rescue Service: The Journey of Andrii Tertyshnikov from Odesa Region
Andrii Tertyshnikov, a resident of the Odesa region, transitioned from over 11 years of service in the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) to saving lives with the State Emergency Service (SES). His military experience includes fighting in the battles for Pisky, Donetsk, and Mariupol, where he spent seven months defending the front line. After leaving the military, Andrii joined the Odesa region SES five years ago—a role that became even more critical following the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Today, Andrii is actively involved in extinguishing fires, clearing debris, and searching for survivors. The onset of the war brought a surge in shelling and workload, underscoring the importance of his mission.
“I just wanted to be where people needed help the most,” says Andrii.
Andrii is married with two children. His decision to serve in the rescue service was a deliberate choice to assist others during difficult times. Yet, he also carries the weight of responsibility.
“When you do everything you can, but you can’t save someone in time,” he notes. For Andrii, the ultimate goal remains “a peaceful sky, calm, and stability for Ukraine.” His story stands as a powerful example of dedication and heroism in the fight for citizens’ lives and safety.
The Vital Role of Rescue Workers
Andrii Tertyshnikov’s journey highlights not only personal commitment but also the critical importance of the rescue profession during wartime. Since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine began, the State Emergency Service has become indispensable for ensuring public safety, emphasizing the growing need for such specialists. Service in both the AFU and the SES demonstrates how military experience can be redirected to aid civilians in emergencies.
This serves as a reminder of the need to support and develop these professions in society, especially in the face of modern challenges.
Andrii Tertyshnikov’s commitment to saving lives is echoed in the recent recognition of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. The posthumous award presented to a fallen rescuer's wife highlights the profound sacrifices made by rescue workers, reinforcing the critical role they play in times of crisis. This acknowledgment serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by emergency services amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
