Viktoriia Goncharuk: Trading Finance for Frontline Medicine
At just 22 years old, Viktoriia Goncharuk made a life-altering decision, leaving her finance career at Morgan Stanley in New York to become an emergency combat medic in Ukraine. Her story highlights the profound personal sacrifices many Ukrainians abroad have made since the full-scale invasion began. Within two weeks of returning to her homeland, she was evacuating wounded soldiers from the front lines. Despite having no prior combat or medical experience, Viktoriia completed a week of intensive training and began working a mere 800 meters from the frontline.
A Return to Roots
Born in the Zhytomyr region, Viktoriia moved to the United States at age 15, living in Texas and attending high school there. She later studied computer science and data at a university in San Francisco. While in America, she secured an apartment and received offers to return to her previous job, but she declined them all.

In her new role, Viktoriia helps treat critically injured patients with severe wounds, including limb and facial losses. During one evacuation, she sustained several concussions from an aerial bomb striking the building. Viktoriia recalls, 'I was afraid of blood. Afraid of needles. I had never done anything medical. But I knew this is what I had to do.' She has also endured the loss of three friends who were killed in the war, a devastating blow:

Viktoriia Goncharuk continues her mission on the front, understanding the immense significance of her actions. 'If I die tomorrow, I have almost nothing to regret. I have lived a good life. I have repaid my debt,' she summarizes, reflecting her resolute philosophy and determination in fighting for her country.
Viktoriia Goncharuk's story is a testament to the courage and dedication of young people who, despite immense hardship and danger, are willing to risk their lives to defend their homeland. Her return to Ukraine and enlistment as a combat medic underscores not only a profound personal transformation but also a broader trend among Ukrainians seeking active roles in the nation's defense. Her experience further emphasizes the critical importance of frontline medical aid, where every second can mean the difference between life and death for patients.
