Graphics Card: Types, Features, and Selection Rules

Вибір відеокарти: ключові аспекти, різновиди та рекомендації.

Computers are an integral part of modern life. Among the many components of a PC, the graphics card plays one of the most important roles. Its performance directly influences gaming quality and the visual output. For optimum memory volume, one can immediately settle on a 6GB graphics card as a universal solution, sufficient for gaming for the next 3-4 years. However, the nuances of selection do not end here.

Types of Graphics Cards and Main Characteristics

The performance of the card is very important for those who work with graphics as well as for gamers. There are 2 types of such components:

  1. Integrated. This is built directly into the central processor (CPU) or the motherboard. It is suitable for performing office tasks and watching video content, but its performance is insufficient for gaming and professional graphics.
  2. Discrete. This is a separate component that connects to the motherboard. It is characterized by better performance indicators and is suitable for complex tasks.

Among the most important parameters to consider when choosing this component are:

  • Memory (VRAM). This is similar to the RAM of a PC. The larger it is, the better, but also more expensive.
  • Memory bus. The wider it is, the higher the bandwidth for data exchange between the motherboard and the graphics card.
  • Memory type. It is best to buy graphics cards of the GDDR 6 standard or higher.
  • Cooling. It can be air, liquid, or passive.

Modern graphics cards have complex cooling systems, including air cooling with fans, heat pipes, and radiators, as well as liquid cooling for effective heat dissipation.

Post-Processing Technologies

The more modern a graphics card is, the more post-processing technologies it supports. This doesn't mean that a game won't run on an older graphics card. You just won't see all the capabilities of the game engine and won't enjoy the full richness of the visuals that the developers created.

Graphics Memory Volume

The graphics card processes and prepares graphics for output, and all data is stored in video memory. The volume can vary:

  • 4GB is the minimum volume starting from which one should consider the component; it is quite sufficient for medium graphics settings at Full HD resolution;
  • from 6GB to 8GB is the optimal choice for Full HD and 2K resolution;
  • from 12GB to 16GB supports 4K resolution, suitable for top AAA games for about 5 years;
  • over 24GB are professional solutions for graphic work (this is excessive for gamers).

When choosing a graphics card, one should consider their budget and the games they want to play. Top shooters would require a hefty investment, while strategies from past years would do well with budget options.
