Starlink Terminals Disconnected in Combat Zones
Ukrainian military forces have reported a disruption of Starlink terminal service on the front lines. This outage resulted from an inability to activate tens of thousands of terminals within an extremely tight deadline. Serhiy Beskrestnov, an advisor to the Minister of Defense known as Flash, explained the causes and consequences of this disconnection, which included the successful blocking of Russian Starlink systems. He noted that the timeline for registering Starlink terminals across the Ukrainian Armed Forces was very compressed, and the short activation window depended on SpaceX, the company's partner. Starlink has become a vital communications backbone for Ukraine's military, making any disruption a significant operational challenge.
In a conversation with military blogger Marusia Zvirobii, Serhiy Flash pointed out that some issues stemmed from those who failed to promptly submit lists for private Starlink terminals. As a result, commanders and communications officers are facing consequences. According to him, not all terminals submitted for registration were activated in time, which caused the loss of connectivity. Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov has emphasized the critical need for swift verification of Starlink terminals.

Marusia Zvirobii states that terminals for which applications were submitted on February 4-5 will be activated today, while those submitted on February 5-6 will be activated tomorrow. She also noted that they received information indicating the initial plan allowed a full month for the activation process. The Starlink disconnection has caused difficulties, but, according to Flash, this outcome is far preferable to a massive, nationwide strike on the Starlink network. The Russian army, in turn, has encountered serious problems on the front due to this disconnection, with ground-based robotic complexes becoming unable to perform their functions.
