Power Outages This Winter: Kyiv Awaits 16-Hour Blackouts Due to Substation Damage

Темні години зимового сезону: Київ готується до тривалих відключень електроенергії через пошкодження підстанцій.

Power Outages in Ukraine

Power outages for Ukrainians may last throughout the winter, particularly in Kyiv, due to damage to the energy infrastructure. People's Deputy Oleksiy Kucherenko predicts that the duration of outages will range from 12 to 16 hours. This is due to damage to a transformer substation located 30 km from the capital, which prevents the transmission of power.

Kyiv relies on the Rivne and Khmelnytskyi nuclear power plants; however, the situation is becoming more complicated. Oleksiy Kucherenko noted that

“the appropriate substation was damaged near Kyiv, and we cannot take additional power”
This could lead to an energy deficit in the capital throughout the winter. The most difficult situation is also expected in Sumy and Kharkiv regions, where the effects of outages may be felt even more strongly.

Kucherenko emphasized that

“every strike by Russia on energy infrastructure is critical”
, pointing to the importance of stable energy supply for the population. In this regard, residents of Kyiv and other regions must be prepared for prolonged power outages.

Vulnerability of Energy Infrastructure

This situation highlights the vulnerability of Ukraine's energy infrastructure, which, despite efforts for recovery and modernization, remains under threat from military actions. Prolonged power outages can affect not only daily life but also economic activity, raising concerns among the population and businesses.

It is important for government agencies to ensure proper communication with citizens and provide them with information about possible actions in the event of outages.
