New The Witcher 3 Expansion Announced

On May 27 at 1:40 PM, it was revealed that a new expansion titled Songs of the Past has been announced for the acclaimed game The Witcher 3. This content is being developed by CD Projekt Red in collaboration with Fool's Theory, a studio composed of industry veterans and former CDPR employees. The expansion is scheduled for release in 2027, marking 12 years since the original game launched and 11 years after the debut of the previous DLC, Blood and Wine.

Details on the New Expansion

Fool's Theory is also recognized for its work on the remake of the first Witcher game and its involvement in creating the fourth installment of the series. The new expansion will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The creators have promised to reveal more details about the storyline and features of the DLC by the end of summer 2026.

Confirmation of the new expansion came a day before a scheduled livestream, following a leak on the company's own game launcher.

'We originally planned to make this big announcement during our REDstreams tomorrow, but, let's just say, we found something on the RED Launcher that we weren't expecting to see yet,' stated representatives from CD Projekt.

With the release of this new content, the studio will update the minimum system requirements for The Witcher 3. Developers will drop support for:

  • Windows 10
  • HDD hard drives
  • DX11 technology

New requirements will include Windows 11, an SSD, and DX12. 'We need to update the system requirements to ensure stable performance and compatibility in the future,' the developers added.

Production of The Witcher 4 is ongoing, but the game will not be released before 2027. As part of CDPR's six-year plan, the fifth and sixth installments of the franchise are also slated for release. Meanwhile, the developers have permanently abandoned creating new content for Cyberpunk 2077, and a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 is not expected until at least 2030. This information regarding the sequel's release date was provided by CDPR's joint CEO, Michał Nowakowski.

The announcement of a new expansion for The Witcher 3, which celebrates key anniversaries for the franchise, signals continued support and development of the popular series. The partnership with Fool's Theory suggests that CD Projekt Red is aiming to bring in experienced talent to enhance the quality of new projects. The update to system requirements also demonstrates the company's intent to adopt modern technologies to improve the gaming experience.
