The Dawn of Astronomical Filmmaking
In 1900, Nevil Maskelyne created what is now recognized as the earliest surviving astronomical film—a recording of a total solar eclipse. This groundbreaking footage, lost for many decades, was recently rediscovered by an archivist from the Royal Astronomical Society and digitally restored by the National Archive of the British Film Institute.
This remarkable eclipse recording stands as the oldest known astronomical film preserved to date. It had remained unidentified and unseen in the Royal Astronomical Society’s archives for a long time. Nevil Maskelyne, the filmmaker behind the footage, was the son of a London magician and co-owner of the "Egyptian Hall" magic theater on Piccadilly. Besides his ties to magic, he was an amateur astronomer and a member of the Royal Astronomical Society.
Filming Challenges and Restoration Journey
Maskelyne engineered a telescopic adapter for his motion picture camera, which he called an animatograph. His initial attempt to film a solar eclipse took place on May 28, 1898, in India, but the film was stolen during the return journey. In May 1900, Maskelyne traveled to North Carolina with the British Astronomical Association expedition to capture another eclipse. Although much of his equipment was lost before crossing the Atlantic, he managed to assemble a new camera and adapter on-site.
During the eclipse, Maskelyne recorded footage at five frames per second throughout totality and for an additional four minutes afterward. The British Film Institute’s National Archive has since scanned and restored the film, making it available on their official YouTube channel. Interestingly, many early filmmakers, including Georges Méliès—the pioneer behind the science-fiction classic "A Trip to the Moon"—had backgrounds in magic. The restoration highlights the shared history between astronomy and early cinema, emphasizing the crucial role enthusiasts played in advancing both fields.
This restored film not only marks a major milestone in cinematic history but also underscores astronomy’s cultural and scientific significance. Preserving such archival treasures enriches modern understanding of the progression of scientific discovery and technological innovation.
