High-Voltage Power Line Restored

Repair crews have successfully restored a high-voltage power transmission line connecting Ukraine and Moldova, following a major technical failure that triggered a cascading blackout across Ukraine's power grid. The repairs were completed overnight on Saturday, February 1, adding 500 MW of capacity to help stabilize the energy supply in southern Ukraine. This restoration is a critical step in securing the region's power infrastructure, which remains vulnerable.

Technical Failure and Widespread Impact

The cascading failure began at 10:42 a.m. on January 31, when a 400 kV line between the Romanian and Moldovan power systems and a 750 kV line connecting western and central Ukraine were simultaneously disconnected. This incident highlights the interconnected nature of the European power grid, where a fault in one area can rapidly affect others.

The resulting blackout had severe consequences:

  • The entire city of Kyiv was temporarily left without electricity;
  • Metro services in Kharkiv and Kyiv came to a halt;
  • In Vinnytsia, the main water pumping station stopped, leaving the city without water;
  • Power units at several nuclear power plants had to be unloaded.

The situation in the energy system is gradually stabilizing, with all three lines of the Kyiv metro having resumed normal operations. According to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the large-scale failure that occurred on the morning of January 31 may have been caused by adverse weather conditions.

The restoration of the power line between Ukraine and Moldova is a vital step in ensuring grid stability, particularly in a context where technical failures can severely disrupt daily life. Ukrainian authorities continue to work on improving the state of the energy infrastructure to prevent similar situations in the future. This incident also underscores the importance of international cooperation in the energy sector, which can help reduce the likelihood of such cascading blackouts.
