Russia’s War on Ukraine Surpasses the Duration of Both World Wars

Конфлікт в Україні триває вже довше, ніж і перша, і друга світові війни разом узяті.

1,600 Days of Conflict in Ukraine

On July 12, 2026, the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation reached its 1,600th day. This milestone means the conflict has already outlasted several major historical wars. For context, World War I lasted 1,568 days, and the Great Patriotic War (the Soviet term for WWII on the Eastern Front) spanned 1,418 days. In contrast, the Blitz—Germany's bombing campaign against Britain in 1940—lasted only 267 days. Ukraine’s war has now stretched beyond three and a half years, underscoring its immense scale and complexity.

Russia’s losses in this conflict are equally staggering. The total number of eliminated Russian occupiers in Ukraine has exceeded 400,000, with over 450,000 killed. Each month, Russia loses roughly 8,500 soldiers to death. To put that in perspective, the Soviet Union lost about 15,000 troops over 10 years in Afghanistan, and the United States suffered 58,220 fatalities during eight years of active combat in Vietnam. The battles for Bakhmut, Avdiivka, the Pokrovsk direction, and Chasiv Yar have already eclipsed the 303-day Verdun meat grinder of 1916.

Possible Scenarios for the Kremlin’s Next Moves

Given the current situation, experts are analyzing potential courses of action for the Kremlin. Andriy Kovalenko notes that

“to achieve this, Russian propagandists are already crafting a narrative that dictator Putin was poorly informed about the front-line situation, and that the war has reached a stalemate due to the actions of lying generals.”
Possible scenarios include:

  • a shift toward total mobilization under a new guise;
  • an escalation of energy and civilian terror;
  • nuclear blackmail and deliberate stalling tactics.

Analysts also consider the likelihood of the war continuing at least until 2028, or alternatively, a drift toward a ceasefire and a frozen conflict. Against the backdrop of new draft laws allowing the use of the army in other countries to protect Russian citizens, aggressive actions against the Baltic states are a possibility.

“This could involve aggressive actions against the Baltic states,”
Kovalenko adds.

As a result, the situation in Ukraine remains extremely tense, with the world closely watching Russia’s next moves in this protracted conflict. Deeper analytical research and forecasting will be critical to understanding potential shifts in the geopolitical landscape and assessing the risks that may emerge in the region. The Kremlin’s future actions could have serious consequences not only for Ukraine but for the security of Europe as a whole.

The prolonged conflict in Ukraine raises questions about Russia's military strategy and potential recruitment methods. As the Kremlin faces mounting losses, experts suggest that Russia may find ways to bolster its forces without large-scale mobilization, which could significantly impact the war's trajectory. Understanding these dynamics is crucial as the situation evolves.
