War and Energy Crisis: How Kyiv Found Itself on the Brink of Catastrophe and What Awaits Ukraine
Ukraine continues to resist the full-scale Russian aggression, which has put the very existence of the state at risk. Russia has annexed four regions of Ukraine, and after the failure of the summer counteroffensive in 2023, Ukraine has lost about 10,000 km² of territory. It is estimated that up to 5 million Ukrainian citizens are on Russian territory. Putin's spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that the main condition for Ukraine is the withdrawal of troops from Donbas. Moscow also demands a neutral status for Ukraine and participation in elections for citizens who are in occupied territories. On the other hand, the USA offered Ukraine security guarantees for 15 years, as well as the idea of creating a free economic zone.
The Internal Situation in Ukraine
The internal situation in Ukraine remains tense due to the energy crisis and political instability. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko stated that there are 1600 buildings in the city without heating, and the temperature in offices in the center may remain between +4 and +9 degrees for a month and a half.
'Kyiv is on the brink of catastrophe, and the preservation of Ukraine as an independent state is in question.' – Vitali Klitschko
In the Verkhovna Rada, some deputies are sick with rotavirus, while others are sabotaging sessions. At the same time, corruption investigations are ongoing:
- The former Minister of Energy Herman Halushchenko has been charged with participating in a criminal organization and money laundering;
Amid this, Russia is preparing for a new massive shelling of Ukrainian territory.
