Six Ukrainian Athletes Killed in War: Their Names and Where They Fell

War in Ukraine Claims the Lives of Prominent Sports Figures

Since the onset of the full-scale war, Ukraine has lost many citizens, including a number of highly accomplished athletes. These six individuals, each with notable achievements in their respective sports, were killed in combat operations on the front lines:

  • Mykola Litovchenko
  • Dmytro Rusetskyi

  • Nikita Litvinov

Athletes and Their Sacrifices

A Greco-Roman wrestler, Andrii Yaremenko was a member of the national team and competed at the world cadet championships. After the war began, he served as a drone operator in the 115th Separate Brigade of the Territorial Defense Forces. He died on December 4, 2025, while fighting on the Zaporizhzhia front.

Volodymyr Vasylyshyn, a Candidate for Master of Sports in sports tourism, had registered for the Ukrainian Ski Mountaineering Championship on January 5. He served as a combat medic with the 241st Separate Brigade of the Territorial Defense Forces. Volodymyr was killed on January 5 on the Zaporizhzhia front.

Mykola Litovchenko, a Master of Sports of Ukraine and two-time WPKA junior world champion in kickboxing, joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine in 2025. He worked as a drone operator for the 81st Separate Airmobile Slobozhanska Brigade of the Air Assault Forces. Mykola died on February 5 while fighting on the Lyman front.

Dmytro Rusetskyi, a Master of Sports of International Class in WAKO kickboxing, was a medalist at World and European Cups and a national champion of Ukraine. He was killed on February 15 near the settlement of Pysarivka.

Oleksandr Diedov, a Candidate for Master of Sports of Ukraine in mixed martial arts (MMA), died on April 7 as a result of an artillery strike.

Nikita Litvinov, a graduate of the Sumy youth sports school’s gymnastics program, also played for the Sumy hockey club. He served in the Polissia Brigade of the Air Assault Forces and was killed on April 9 by a hostile drone strike on the Dnipropetrovsk front.

These losses underscore the heavy price Ukraine continues to pay while defending its sovereignty. They leave a painful void in the hearts of teammates, fans, and the broader sports community.

The situation in Ukraine remains dire, and the deaths of such talented individuals highlight not only the deep toll on the sports world but also the collective grief felt across society.
