Valeria Stepanova 'Demon' Killed in Combat Amid Calls to Probe Harassment in Ukrainian Military

У загиблого бійця Валерії Степанової виникають нові вимоги до розслідування випадків мобінгу в українських Збройних силах.

The Tragic Loss of Valeria Stepanova

Valeria Stepanova, a military operator of FPV drones known by her call sign 'Demon,' was killed during a combat mission after a Russian drone strike. Her death gained public attention through the campaign 'She Stands,' which has demanded an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death as well as the harassment allegations she had previously made public.

In August 2026, Stepanova reported incidents of harassment while serving in the 118th Separate Territorial Defense Brigade. Following her complaints, she was transferred to another battalion, where she again endured physical abuse, including being beaten and strangled. Fearing for her safety, she left her unit without authorization. This prompted the command of the 118th Brigade to initiate an official inquiry into the matter.

After departing from the 118th Brigade, Valeria joined the 432nd Separate Unmanned Systems Regiment, where she continued her service. Her death was announced by Olena Oliynyk, founder of the 'She Stands' project, who highlighted that Valeria was a mother.

“She died a Heroine, defending Ukraine and all of us. Young, beautiful, a mother. Her children have lost their mom. There are no words to contain this pain,” Oliynyk said.

Valeria openly shared her experience of harassment, describing how she was pressured to drink alcohol and subsequently subjected to physical assaults. “We have to keep working because the situation is tense, and positions lose communication. The commander and deputy commander call people one by one into their rooms and get them to drink. When it was my turn, they invited me in and offered a drink. I refused because I don't drink! Their response was, ‘Then we’ll force it down,’” she recounted.

Demanding a Thorough Investigation

The 'She Stands' initiative has urged for an independent review of the events leading to Valeria’s death and the harassment claims she raised.

“We are not asserting a direct link between these events, but this issue requires an unbiased investigation and clear answers,” the project representatives stated.

Valeria Stepanova’s death has sparked widespread discussion about the safety and rights of women serving in the armed forces. It highlights critical gaps in protections and support mechanisms that should be in place for all service members, regardless of gender. This case underscores the urgent need for comprehensive examinations of violence within military ranks and reinforces the importance of safeguarding the rights of female soldiers amid ongoing conflicts.
