Centenarian Honored: The Story of Paraskovia Gural, a UPA Military Courier

Шанування довгожительки: Історія Парасковії Гураль, кур'єра Української Повстанської Армії.

Celebrating Ukraine's Centenarians

Ukraine has recently honored three remarkable centenarians. The spotlight falls on Paraskovia Gural from the Ivano-Frankivsk region, who has just turned 100. Her life story is extraordinary, beginning in her youth when, at just 13 years old, she became a military courier for the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) under the pseudonym 'Berizka'. In 1946, she married Mykhailo Gural, and together they raised seven children. Today, she has 18 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great-grandchildren, all of whom live in Ukraine.

In addition to Paraskovia Gural, Oleksii Likhtorovych, a World War II veteran, celebrated his 101st birthday in Lutsk. His wartime contributions are remembered, and he remains a symbol of courage for younger generations.

Resilience Through Hardship

Another notable figure is Valentyna Maslenkova, who marked her 105th birthday. She resides in Kamianske, a city known as Dniprodzerzhynsk until 2016. Her life has been marked by profound loss; during World War II she lost a hand and later outlived three of her own children, including an eight-month-old daughter who died of tuberculosis. She is now cared for by her grandson and daughter-in-law.

These centenarians' stories reflect the complex and often difficult lives of those who have endured wars and other hardships. As President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted:

“The situation remains difficult.”

The milestones of Paraskovia Gural, Oleksii Likhtorovych, and Valentyna Maslenkova testify to the resilience and vitality of the Ukrainian people across different historical eras. The UPA was a partisan army that fought for Ukrainian independence during and after World War II, a period of immense turmoil.

These anniversaries are not just celebrations of personal longevity; they are a testament to collective memory and the historical experience of the Ukrainian nation. They remind us of the importance of preserving family bonds and supporting one another in difficult times. Amidst contemporary challenges like war and socio-economic hardship, the lives of these individuals serve as a source of inspiration and strength for many Ukrainians.

As we celebrate the remarkable lives of centenarians like Paraskovia Gural, it's also inspiring to explore how other long-lived individuals attribute their longevity to simple joys and steadfast beliefs.
