Arrest in Vinnytsia
Police in Vinnytsia have arrested a 39-year-old man on suspicion of illegally storing an explosive device and threatening his wife. The incident unfolded on May 18 after a resident of a building on Pirogov Street alerted the emergency line 102 about a potential explosive item. According to the Main Department of the National Police in Vinnytsia Oblast, the suspect had repeatedly indicated during family disputes that he intended to use the device.
During an urgent search of the man’s home, law enforcement officers seized an object resembling a hand grenade along with its detonator. The confiscated items have been sent for forensic examination. A pre-trial investigation has been launched under Part 1 of Article 263 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which addresses the illegal handling of weapons, ammunition, or explosives. If convicted, the suspect faces up to seven years in prison.
Other Incidents Involving Explosive Devices
This case is not an isolated one in Vinnytsia. On May 11, a man detonated a pyrotechnic grenade while speaking with police officers on Serhiy Zulinsky Street. Additionally, in Bila Tserkva, Kyiv Oblast, a local resident threw a grenade near a military enlistment office building, causing an explosion. No injuries or structural damage were reported in that incident, and the suspect has been taken into custody. During a search in Bila Tserkva, authorities discovered two additional F-1 combat grenades.
These events highlight the ongoing challenge of illegal weapons and explosives trafficking in Ukraine. The rise in cases involving threats of violence—both within families and in public spaces—underscores the urgent need for stricter arms control and improved law enforcement response systems. Cooperation between society and state institutions is essential to ensure public safety and prevent similar incidents in the future.
This alarming incident is part of a troubling pattern in Vinnytsia, where illegal explosives are becoming increasingly common. For instance, just days before, a military man detonated a grenade during a police interview, highlighting the urgent need for heightened awareness and preventive measures against such dangerous behaviors.
