Joint Military Exercise Eagle Partner-2026
From June 17 to 25, Armenia will host multinational military drills under the name Eagle Partner-2026, with troops from the United States, France, and Greece taking part on its soil. The exercise will involve units from four nations: Armenia, the US, France, and Greece. Armenia will contribute 250 personnel, the United States 58, France 24, and Greece 11 soldiers.
According to Armenia’s Ministry of Defense, the training is designed to prepare service members for international peacekeeping missions. Its primary objectives include:
- improving interoperability between military contingents in multinational operations;
- facilitating knowledge and experience sharing;
- strengthening the readiness of Armenian peacekeeping forces.
Participants will focus on planning and executing peacekeeping operations, coordinating between units, managing forces, and maintaining tactical communications.
Political Backdrop
It is worth noting that Sergey Naryshkin, head of Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service, previously cast doubt on the results of Armenia’s parliamentary elections, which were won by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s party. In response, Armenia has frozen its involvement in the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), signaling a pivot toward the West and deepening security and defense ties with the United States and France. The Armenian Ministry of Defense emphasizes that joint exercises with partner nations are conducted on a regular basis. Moscow has described the situation in the country as difficult and expressed skepticism about the latest election outcome.
The Eagle Partner-2026 drills highlight Armenia’s growing military collaboration with Western countries amid shifting regional politics. Its suspension of CSTO participation may point to a reorientation of the nation’s geopolitical stance, which could have lasting implications for its foreign policy and security framework. These exercises may mark a significant step in boosting Armenia’s defense capabilities and integrating it into international peacekeeping structures.
As Armenia strengthens its military ties with Western nations, the political landscape remains tense. Following the recent parliamentary elections, which have drawn skepticism from Moscow, the implications of these developments on Armenia's security strategy are significant.
