Envision Energy has released a prototype of a two-blade wind turbine that has operated for over 500 days and has shown good results. This wind turbine, based on Envision's 3.6-megawatt Game Changer turbine, includes additional enhancements such as a high-speed induction generator and modular components in the gondola. The company claims that they have managed to solve the vibration and load imbalance issues that had previously been relevant for two-blade wind generators.
Adding a third blade to a wind turbine usually provides only a slight efficiency gain compared to transitioning from one to two blades. However, according to NREL data, this can be significant, as the costs of system balancing represent a substantial portion of the capital costs of installing a wind power plant. Thus, Envision Energy’s two-blade wind turbine solution may have potential for further development in the wind energy sector.
