A Two-Day Oatmeal Regimen Shown to Reduce Cholesterol by 10%

Study Finds Short Oatmeal Diet Lowers Cholesterol Significantly

Research from the University of Bonn has demonstrated that a brief diet consisting almost entirely of oatmeal can effectively lower cholesterol in individuals with metabolic syndrome. The findings, published in the journal Nature Communications, indicate the diet's benefits persisted for six weeks after it ended. Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions that significantly increases the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

The study involved 32 men and women diagnosed with metabolic syndrome, which encompasses risk factors such as:

  • excess weight,
  • high blood pressure,
  • elevated blood glucose and lipid levels.

Participants followed a low-calorie diet for two days, consuming three daily meals composed solely of oatmeal prepared with water, with the option to add a small amount of fruit or vegetables. Each person ate 300 grams of oats daily, amounting to roughly half their usual caloric intake. A control group adhered to a similar low-calorie diet without oatmeal.

As a result of the diet, participants' LDL ("bad") cholesterol levels dropped by 10%, a substantial reduction, though not fully comparable to modern pharmaceutical effects. On average, participants also lost two kilograms and experienced a slight decrease in blood pressure. The next phase of the research will investigate the potential for a lasting preventive effect from repeating this intensive oat-based diet every six weeks.

Junior Professor Marie-Christine Simon from the University of Bonn's Institute of Nutritional and Food Sciences noted that while effective drugs exist for treating diabetes today, this oat-based therapeutic approach has been largely overlooked in recent decades.

She also emphasized that adhering to this short oatmeal diet at regular intervals could be an effective strategy for maintaining healthy cholesterol levels and preventing diabetes. This research highlights the potential benefits of short-term oat-focused diets for individuals with metabolic syndrome, offering a simple dietary intervention that can meaningfully impact cholesterol and overall health.
