Ukrainian Navy Downs Ka-27 Helicopter Following Strike on Frigate 'Admiral Essen' in Novorossiysk

Українські Військово-Морські Сили знищили вертоліт Ка-27 після атаки на фрегат «Адмірал Essen» у Новоросійську.

Ukrainian Naval Operations

On March 5, 2026, the Ukrainian Navy destroyed a Russian Ka-27 helicopter over the Black Sea. This action was part of ongoing Ukrainian military efforts to degrade Russia's naval capabilities in the region.

Strikes on Russian Vessels

In a separate operation, Ukrainian Security Service and Defense Forces struck the Russian frigate 'Admiral Essen' in the port of Novorossiysk during the night of March 2. This frigate is a carrier of 'Kalibr' cruise missiles. The attack struck the ship's central superstructure, igniting a deck fire that burned for approximately 18 hours. The strike also triggered explosions among the frigate's grenade launchers, which are designed to deploy thermal decoys and radio signal dispersants.

Ukrainian forces also hit the sea minesweeper 'Valentin Pikul' and damaged the anti-submarine ships 'Yeysk' and 'Kasimov'. These events highlight the continued intensity of combat in the Black Sea and Ukraine's sustained efforts to counter Russian naval aggression. The Black Sea has become a critical theater where Ukraine, despite having a smaller navy, has successfully challenged Russia's fleet using innovative tactics and long-range weapons.

The recent military actions demonstrate an escalation in the multi-year conflict. Ukraine's armed forces are actively working to neutralize threats posed by the Russian fleet, which holds strategic importance for regional security. The destruction of the helicopter and strikes on key warships underscore the vital role of maritime operations in Ukraine's defense strategy and its readiness to take decisive action against aggression.
