Completion of pre-trial investigation
Investigators have completed the pre-trial investigation regarding the driver who caused serious bodily harm to the cyclist and left him unconscious on the roadside. The incident occurred in September 2022 on Mezhyhirskaya Street in the Podilsky district of Kyiv. The SUV driver reacted aggressively to the remarks of the 40-year-old cyclist, resulting in several strikes to him. The victim was hospitalized with serious bodily injuries.
Charges and Consequences
The suspect in this case is a 44-year-old entrepreneur residing in the Kyiv region. He is charged under part 1 of article 121 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine - intentional serious bodily harm, as well as under part 3 of article 135 - willful abandonment without assistance. The maximum penalty for the specified articles provides for up to eight years of imprisonment.
The investigation has established all the circumstances of the case, and now the driver who left the victim without assistance may face serious criminal liability.
This case underscores the importance of driver accountability for their actions on the road and their attitude towards road participants, especially cyclists. In Ukraine, there is a growing incidence of aggression on the road, which raises concerns among the public and law enforcement agencies. It is important that such incidents become a reason to strengthen the enforcement of traffic regulations and ensure the safety of all road participants.
