Emergency Divers Halt Flooding at Kyiv Power Plant

In an extraordinary six-day operation, divers from Ukraine's State Emergency Service (SES) successfully stopped severe flooding at a Kyiv thermal power plant (TPP) caused by a Russian missile strike. The mission was critical to restoring the plant's ability to provide heat and electricity to the capital. The flooding resulted from a damaged pipe, and repairs were conducted under extreme conditions with air temperatures plunging to -15°C (-5°F).

Braving Sub-Zero Waters to Restore Vital Infrastructure

Despite the perilous environment of freezing water and severe cold, the SES dive team completed their task. Ukraine's Minister of Internal Affairs, Ihor Klymenko, confirmed the leak was sealed, allowing restoration work to proceed. He emphasized their courage, stating:

“Without hesitation, in icy water and under extreme conditions, our divers began work to eliminate the damage.” — Ihor Klymenko

Following the high-stakes operation, five divers received state awards for their bravery:

  • The Order 'For Courage' III Class was awarded to Artem Orlov, Denys Frolov, and Mykhailo Khyzhnak.
  • The Order of Danylo Halytskyi was awarded to Andrii Vlasenko.
  • The Medal 'Defender of the Fatherland' was awarded to Anton Haitan.

Minister Klymenko highlighted the operation's significance in restoring the capital's critical infrastructure. This mission underscores the vital role of rescue services during wartime emergencies, where repairing energy and heating systems is a matter of survival, especially in winter. The state recognition of the divers' courage and dedication serves as a powerful example for society during this challenging period.
