Its name comes from the characteristic noise and 'whisper' of the water rushing down from the height, creating crystal streams and splashes. Shypit waterfall is located on the Pylypets River within the village of Pylypets, in the Mizhhiria district of the Transcarpathian region. In spring and after rains, the flow becomes abundant and powerful, while in winter, Shypit transforms into a fairy-tale ice sculpture, covered with icicles and snow patterns.

What to see near the waterfall?

Shypit waterfall is just one of the many interesting locations that can be visited nearby. First of all, you should climb Mount Hemba (1491 m), which offers a wonderful panorama of the Carpathians. This is a popular spot among tourists and skiers, as there are ski trails and lifts located here.

There are also picturesque pastures nearby, where in summer you can taste authentic Carpathian cheese and brynza made by local shepherds. Not far away is the village of Izki with an eco-resort, where tourists can relax in modern cottages, try traditional dishes, and order excursions.

Another interesting location is the Borzhavsky meadows, which stretch for several dozen kilometers. Here you can see fantastic landscapes, blooming meadows, and also feel the special atmosphere of silence and tranquility. For those who love history and culture, it is worth visiting Mizhhiria and Synevyr Lake, which are relatively close to Shypit.

Routes

You can reach the waterfall via several routes. The most popular option is from the village of Pylypets. A convenient tourist trail about 1.5 km long leads from the main road, taking no more than 20-30 minutes on foot. There are signs along the route, so it is almost impossible to get lost.

Another path starts from the 'Pylypets' ski resort, where you can use a lift to Mount Hemba and then descend to the waterfall along trails through picturesque forests. This route is especially popular among those who want to combine active rest on the slopes with an excursion to Shypit.

For more experienced tourists, there are mountain routes through the Borzhavsky ridge that pass by Shypit. These are long but incredibly exciting journeys that allow you to enjoy not only the waterfall itself but also the beauty of the surrounding mountain landscapes.

Where is it located and how to get there?

The main question remains, where exactly is the waterfall located? Shypit is located in the Transcarpathian region, near the village of Pylypets in the Mizhhiria district. The most convenient way to reach here is by car. If you drive from Lviv, it takes about 3.5-4 hours through Slavske and Volovets. From Volovets to Pylypets, there are shuttle buses, and from the village itself, you can either walk or take a taxi to the waterfall.

For those traveling by train, the nearest station is Volovets. From there, tourists often get to the waterfall by bus or hitchhiking. It is important to note that in the summer season and during festivals, transport can be very crowded, so it's better to plan your trip in advance.

  1. The festival at Shypit — every summer, a famous youth festival takes place here, attracting guests from all over Ukraine and abroad. This place has become a true 'mecca' for people who value freedom, creativity, and unity with nature.
  2. Seasonality of beauty — the waterfall looks different depending on the time of year: in spring, it is the most powerful; in summer, it is surrounded by greenery; in autumn, it is incredibly picturesque due to the golden colors of the forest; and in winter, it turns into an icy masterpiece.
  3. The legendary name — the word 'Shypit' is associated with the characteristic noise resembling a whisper, which is created by the water falling from height.

Myths and legends about the waterfall

Don't forget about the myths that literally fill this area. Shypit waterfall is surrounded by numerous legends that are passed down from generation to generation. The most famous tells of tragic love. According to legends, in ancient times there lived a young man and a girl from different clans, their love was forbidden. They secretly met at the mountain stream, but when their parents found out, they separated the lovers. In despair, the girl jumped into the water, and from that moment the sound of the stream resembles the 'whisper' of her soul, which still calls for her beloved.

Another legend claims that the water of Shypit has healing powers: it washes away fatigue, gives energy, and cleanses thoughts. Locals say that if you touch the cold stream of the waterfall and make a wish, it will surely come true.

There is also a belief that the spirits of the mountains live by Shypit, guarding this place. Therefore, tourists must respect nature, not leave trash, and not harm the environment; otherwise, they could invoke the wrath of the Carpathian spirits.
