Volhynian Tragedy: Why It Is Important for Ukraine and Poland to Find Common Truth
Professor Bohdan Hudy emphasized the importance of establishing a dialogue between Ukraine and Poland regarding the Volhynian tragedy of 1943. He underlined the necessity of condemning these events and activating search and exhumation efforts concerning the victims of the Ukrainian-Polish conflict. It was noted that the theme of the Volhynian tragedy dominates the current Ukrainian-Polish historical dialogue, and its discussion is important for both countries.
Bohdan Hudy is a professor at the Faculty of International Relations of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv and a member of the Ukrainian-Polish group dealing with the search and exhumation of victims of the conflict. According to him, exhumations and reburials of Polish citizens in Ukraine are conducted with the permission of the Ukrainian side. Hudy stated:
“We provide and will continue to provide permissions for their conduct”, emphasizing the willingness of the Ukrainian side to cooperate in this sensitive matter.
Path to Reconciliation
The importance of seeking common truth in the context of the Volhynian tragedy is also confirmed by other opinions. As Pope John Paul II said:
“Only the truth will set you free”, and Józef Mackiewicz noted: “Only the truth is interesting.” These quotes reflect a deep understanding that only through recognition and discussion of historical events can reconciliation be achieved and strong relations between Ukraine and Poland be built.
Joint work on understanding the Volhynian events of 1943 can become an important step in strengthening Ukrainian-Polish relations and creating a foundation for future cooperation.
The Volhynian tragedy remains a painful topic for both nations, and its discussion can become a catalyst for the development of bilateral relations. Establishing a dialogue based on openness and willingness for mutual understanding is necessary for overcoming historical traumas. Thus, considering these events in the modern context can contribute not only to historical reconciliation but also to strengthening cooperation between Ukraine and Poland in various fields such as culture, economy, and security.
