Volodymyr Buzhenko: The Final Stand of a Donetsk Airport Hero
Ukrainian soldier Volodymyr Buzhenko was killed on January 20, 2015, during a massive artillery bombardment at Donetsk Airport. His identity was later confirmed through DNA analysis, and his memory continues to be honored by his family and fellow villagers.
Born on July 28, 1988, in the village of Velykyi Kuchuriv, Storozhynets district, he attended the local secondary school before training to become an auto mechanic at a vocational college.
Buzhenko completed his compulsory military service in 2006-2007 with the Airmobile Forces in Lviv. In 2010, he was elected as a deputy to the Velykokuchuriv Village Council. He was mobilized into the Armed Forces of Ukraine in August 2014, serving with the 80th and 81st Brigades as a machine gunner under the call sign "Italian." From November 2014, he participated in the Anti-Terrorist Operation in eastern Ukraine, including the fierce battles for control of Donetsk Airport, a symbol of Ukrainian resistance during the early stages of the conflict.
During combat, he was wounded but risked his life to save his commander and four other soldiers. He ultimately perished when the new terminal building was destroyed; his body was identified among the fallen discovered in the rubble.
Volodymyr Buzhenko was laid to rest in Velykyi Kuchuriv on December 1, 2015. For his demonstrated courage, he was posthumously awarded the Order of Courage, 3rd Class. His hometown renamed a street in his honor.
A Hero Remembered
He is survived by his mother, two sisters, and a brother. Today, his memory is honored not only by his relatives but by all who knew him as a hero who gave his life for his country.
His sister, Olha, recalls his words: "I have to go. What will happen if everyone hides? Then there will be no one left to defend our land."
In his messages, Buzhenko also wrote: "I love you all, no matter what happens" and "Thank you for your prayers. I am still here." During battle, he was heard shouting "Glory to Ukraine!"—a testament to his bravery and patriotism. His story remains in the memory of those who value heroism and self-sacrifice for the sake of peace and freedom.
