WHO Urges Nations to Tighten Disease Surveillance After Hantavirus Outbreak

Світова організація охорони здоров'я закликає країни посилити нагляд за хворобами після спалаху хантавірусу.

Hantavirus Outbreak on a Cruise Ship

The World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has called on countries to ramp up epidemiological monitoring following a hantavirus outbreak aboard the cruise ship MV Hondius. In recent weeks, new infections have been reported across multiple nations, with the WHO confirming at least nine cases. Among those hospitalized are a French woman and a U.S. citizen, heightening concern. The 65-year-old French patient is in critical condition, requiring mechanical ventilation and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) to support her heart and lung function.

The outbreak originated on the vessel during its journey from Argentina to Cape Verde. In Spain, one of 14 passengers quarantined at a military hospital in Madrid has tested positive for the virus. The WHO is mandating medical monitoring, isolation, and a minimum 42-day quarantine, as there is currently no vaccine or effective treatment for hantavirus. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has also responded to the situation, though the UN assesses the public health risk as low.

At this point, there is no indication that we are witnessing the start of a larger outbreak. But the situation could evolve, and given the virus's long incubation period, it is very likely we will see more cases in the coming weeks.

In Ukraine, the Ministry of Health has noted that hantavirus is primarily transmitted from rodents to humans.

Preparedness for Outbreaks

Given these developments, it is crucial to emphasize that while there is currently no pandemic threat, readiness for potential outbreaks remains essential. The WHO is urging nations to stay vigilant and strengthen surveillance measures to curb further spread of the virus. This situation serves as a reminder of the importance of global health cooperation, especially in the face of emerging infectious threats.

As the situation develops, it is important to note that hantavirus has also been reported in neighboring countries, including Poland. Understanding how to protect against this infection is crucial for public health.
