Online course on mental health in Ukraine
From now on, Ukrainian mental health professionals will have the opportunity to take the online course "Specialized Mental Health Services at the Community Level," developed by the World Health Organization (WHO). The official launch of the course took place in Kyiv, and its aim is to prepare specialists and improve access to psychiatric assistance in Ukraine.
The online course is available on the platform of the National Health Service of Ukraine (NHSU). Currently, there are 162 Mental Health Centers operating in Ukraine, funded under the Medical Guarantees Program. The first modules of the course are already available for training, while other modules are planned to be opened by the end of January.
Principles of course implementation
The development of this course is part of a large-scale transformation of psychiatric assistance in Ukraine. Financial support for the project has been provided by France, Canada, and the Netherlands. The course aims to implement key principles for providing specialized mental health assistance at the community level, which include:
- active participation of the individual in their own recovery;
- support for functioning and quality of life;
- social participation.
Among the main principles of the course, respect for the autonomy of the individual and their right to make decisions, the coordinated work of a multidisciplinary team, and the importance of community role and intersectoral interaction are also noted. This course will be an important step in improving the quality of psychiatric assistance and its accessibility for Ukrainians.
The implementation of the online course "Specialized Mental Health Services at the Community Level" is an important stage in reforming the mental health system in Ukraine. The improvement of specialists' qualifications and the accessibility of educational materials will help adapt psychiatric assistance to current requirements, which, in turn, will contribute to improving the psychological well-being of the population. The implementation of the course with financial support from international partners emphasizes the importance of international cooperation in the healthcare sector and the support of Ukraine in its reform aspirations.
