Carbon Monoxide Incident in Yarmolyntsi

Eight people, seven of them children, were hospitalized after being poisoned by carbon monoxide in the village of Yarmolyntsi, Khmelnytskyi region, on January 22. The incident occurred when a gasoline-powered generator was operated in the basement of a residential building. All victims were taken to a local hospital, where medical staff have assessed their condition as satisfactory.

This case highlights a recurring danger in Ukraine, especially during winter when power outages lead to increased reliance on alternative heating and power sources. On the same day, a similar incident in the Kyiv region resulted in six people being poisoned by carbon monoxide due to safety violations involving a generator, while in the Desnianskyi district of Kyiv, a family died from generator fumes inside an apartment.

The Dangers of Carbon Monoxide

Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that can cause severe poisoning or death within minutes. Fuel-burning devices like generators are strictly prohibited for use inside living spaces, basements, or garages. They must only be operated outdoors with all safety precautions in place.

This tragedy underscores the critical hazard of using generators in enclosed spaces. Authorities and safety experts continue to urge the public to strictly follow safety guidelines to prevent such incidents in the future.
