The history of the holiday is connected with events of the year 326, when Empress Helena found the Cross and the tomb of Jesus, and Patriarch Macarius built a cross so that everyone who wished could see the shrine. The holiday was established on September 14.

What can be done on the Exaltation of the Holy Cross

During the holiday, it is recommended to visit churches, listen to divine liturgies, and pray for healing, harvest, and forgiveness of sins. Prayers on this day were considered particularly effective, and the cross symbolized divine protection. Traditionally, people drew crosses on the doors of their homes, sprinkled their houses with holy water, and celebrated the onset of autumn.

What should not be done today

On this day of fasting, one should refrain from meat, fish, and any animal-based foods, avoid swearing and heavy physical labor. It is also advisable to avoid the forest due to the activity of snakes that are preparing for winter.

Signs on the Exaltation of the Holy Cross

On this day, important signs were noted when the onset of cold was predicted. Traditionally, the folk holiday 'kapusnytsia' was celebrated, during which hosts demonstrated their skills and selected suitors. People observed a snake hiding in its burrow, a bear that lay down in its den, and birds migrating south.

Every year on September 14, Christians celebrate the Exaltation of the Honorable and Life-Giving Cross of the Lord. This special holiday is related to the finding of the Cross by Empress Helena in 326 and its elevation for veneration. On this day, believers visit churches, pray, and observe certain prohibitions, while also recalling folk signs of the onset of cold.
