Laparoscopic Correction of Duodenal Atresia
Doctors at Ukraine's National Children's Specialized Hospital 'Okhmatdyt' have performed the country's first laparoscopic surgery to correct duodenal atresia in a newborn. The patient, a baby girl named Anna, is the third child in her family. The condition, a rare blockage in the first part of the small intestine, was diagnosed on her third day of life when she began vomiting, losing weight, and experiencing breathing difficulties. After an X-ray examination, she was urgently transferred and admitted to the intensive care unit at 'Okhmatdyt'. The groundbreaking minimally invasive procedure was successfully carried out on her fifth day of life.
The surgery was performed laparoscopically through three tiny incisions. Surgeon Ihor Shulhyk noted that
"this defect is located in an anatomically complex area near the pancreas, which demands extreme precision during the operation."Now one month old, Anna is eating independently, gaining weight actively, and developing well. As she and her parents prepare to return home, her mother, Viktoriia, emphasized that
"the doctors have been a tremendous support for our family."This complex procedure highlights the advanced pediatric surgical capabilities being developed in Ukraine despite ongoing challenges.
Further Successes for 'Okhmatdyt' Doctors
This case is not an isolated success for the medical team at 'Okhmatdyt'. Previously, specialists at the hospital saved a newborn boy named Vania who had a Laryngo-Tracheo-Esophageal Cleft. Shortly after birth, Vania was unable to make any sound and stopped breathing on his own within an hour. He was intubated, connected to a ventilator, and his rare defect was successfully identified during examination at 'Okhmatdyt'.
Performing laparoscopic correction of duodenal atresia in a newborn demonstrates the high level of medical care available in Ukraine and the ability of its doctors to handle complex cases. These achievements underscore the critical role of specialized medical institutions in treating rare developmental defects, as well as the importance of timely diagnosis and skilled intervention to save newborn lives. Such cases mark significant progress in Ukrainian medicine and the rising standards within its healthcare system.
The advancements in pediatric surgery at 'Okhmatdyt' are not limited to laparoscopic procedures. In a remarkable case, doctors successfully performed life-saving heart surgery on a one-year-old with mirror-image organs. This highlights the hospital's commitment to addressing complex medical conditions in children.
