2026 National Veteran Petanque League Championship Kicks Off in Lviv
From September 19 to 20, 2026, Lviv is the stage for the grand final of the National Veteran Petanque League Championship, featuring war veterans competing for the prestigious VVLП Champions Cup. This year’s tournament has attracted 50 veteran teams, totaling 165 participants from across Ukraine. Competitors represent a diverse range of cities, including:

The opening day of competition concluded with 32 teams advancing to the next stage, which will take place on September 20. The knockout playoff will feature these top teams vying for the 2026 Veteran Petanque Champions Cup. This trophy is contested among the leading veteran teams who have competed in national tournaments held earlier this year in Ternopil, Kryvyi Rih, and Odesa. Currently, the Champions Cup is held by the "Steel Knights" team from Lutsk.
Petanque: A Time-Honored and Accessible Sport
Originating in France, petanque is a traditional game known for its straightforward rules and inclusive nature. Players throw metal balls from within a circle, aiming to land them as close as possible to a small wooden target ball called the cochonnet or "piglet." This sport carries minimal injury risk, making it ideal for stress relief and improving mental focus. Petanque’s growing popularity among Ukrainian veterans stems from its accessibility and suitability for all ages and physical conditions.
The championship not only offers veterans a competitive arena but also fosters camaraderie and social interaction among participants. Emphasizing physical activity tailored for older adults, petanque promotes both mental and physical well-being. Hosting the event in Lviv helps raise awareness of petanque across Ukraine, potentially attracting new players from veteran communities and beyond.
