European Council President's Statement on Ukraine's EU Integration
European Council President António Costa has confirmed that work continues on Ukraine's accession to the European Union, but no definitive end date for the process currently exists. He made this statement during a press conference in Oslo, where he affirmed the EU's readiness to begin formal negotiations. Costa recalled that Ukraine was granted candidate status in June 2022 and stressed the critical need to maintain momentum in the integration process. This comes as Ukraine continues its efforts to align its laws and institutions with EU standards.
The Geopolitical Significance of EU Enlargement
Costa emphasized that EU enlargement represents the most important geopolitical investment the bloc can make to ensure peace and stability in Europe. He also underscored that the EU continues to work on the accession of Ukraine, Moldova, and the Western Balkan countries. However, he was unable to provide a specific timeline for when Ukraine might become a full member of the Union.
“I cannot say whether this will happen in 2027, or even in 2026, or later, but what is important is that we cannot lose momentum,” Costa noted.
He also referenced Portugal's experience, which waited nine years for its own EU membership.
“I remember that my country waited nine years to be admitted to the European Union, and now Ukraine is moving much faster. And I am very optimistic that we will be able to achieve success very soon,” said Costa.The EU accession process traditionally takes years, and Costa called for the continuation of the technical work being carried out by Ukraine.
