Escalating Casualties for the Russian Army
Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy provided figures indicating that Russian army losses have now reached 35,000 per month. This marks a sharp increase from approximately 14,000 monthly losses a year ago. Zelenskyy also stated that Russia is mobilizing 40,000 to 43,000 new troops each month. However, he noted that 10-15% of those mobilized have deserted, with some having sustained injuries. These figures highlight the immense human cost of Russia's ongoing invasion, which began in February 2022.
International Leaders Corroborate the Assessment
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, addressing the same forum, corroborated the information on Russian losses. He stated that in December 2025, the Russian army was losing about 1,000 troops killed in action daily, amounting to total monthly casualties exceeding 30,000 personnel.
Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi, also commented on the issue, asserting that Russia is incapable of expanding its military grouping.
“Their army has stopped growing, which is important for us, thanks to our drone operators and drone technologies,” - Volodymyr Zelenskyy. These statements underscore the severe challenges the Russian military is facing on the battlefield.
The cited data points to the growing difficulties Russia is encountering in its military operations, which could have significant implications for the future of the conflict. The high casualty rate and mobilization problems may impact Russia's long-term capacity to sustain combat operations, a critical factor in the strategic calculations of both Ukraine and its international partners.
