Wi-Fi Alliance Approves New PlayStation Portal Hardware

The Wi-Fi Alliance has officially certified two previously unannounced PlayStation devices, likely updated iterations of the PlayStation Portal console, identified by model numbers CFI-Y2000 and CFI-Y2105. These upcoming devices run on Android 15 and support Wi-Fi connectivity on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands using a 1×1 configuration. Notably, they do not offer Wi-Fi 6 GHz compatibility. For comparison, the current PlayStation Portal model carries the designation CFI-Y1001.

The Role and Future of PlayStation Portal

Designed primarily for streaming games from a home PlayStation console or Sony’s cloud platform, the PlayStation Portal provides a cost-effective way to access gaming content remotely. Sony is also preparing to launch a portable PlayStation device capable of running PS5 titles natively, leveraging next-generation AMD graphics technology. By focusing on streaming, the Portal reduces hardware costs—a key factor amid rising memory prices.

“Cloud streaming demands minimal memory capacity, making it an increasingly appealing, affordable thin client given current market trends with rising memory costs,” Sony stated.

These recent certifications hint at Sony’s ongoing commitment to advancing streaming technology and possibly refreshing its portable gaming lineup. The move reflects how the company is adapting to component market shifts, emphasizing game accessibility for a broad user base. Anticipation for these new devices could boost consumer enthusiasm around Sony’s streaming solutions and portable gaming innovations.
