xAI Restricts Grok AI After Deepfake Scandal: New Content Bans Explained

Обмеження Grok AI: нові правила контенту після скандалу з глибокими підробками.

Grok Chatbot Functionality Restricted

Following a scandal involving the creation of sexual deepfakes, the company xAI has imposed new restrictions on its Grok chatbot. The AI is now prohibited from editing images of real people to add revealing clothing like swimsuits or underwear. These limitations apply to all users, including paying subscribers who previously had access to image generation and editing features. This move highlights the ongoing global challenge of regulating AI-generated synthetic media.

xAI stated it has implemented technical measures to prevent the editing of images of real people into suggestive attire, such as bikinis. This adds an extra layer of protection, aiming to hold accountable those who might misuse a Grok account to violate the law or company policies. Furthermore, Grok will block the creation of images depicting real people in bikinis or underwear in countries where such content is illegal.

Government Reactions and AI Ethics

The situation has triggered an investigation by the California government into xAI. It is known that out of 20,000 images generated during the New Year holidays, the majority depicted people in minimal clothing. Separately, the government of Indonesia has announced a temporary block of the Grok AI tool. Elon Musk, the head of the company, stated:

'I am not aware of any instances of generating images of nude minors.' Elon Musk

The restrictions on Grok's functionality reflect growing scrutiny over the ethics of artificial intelligence and its potential risks to privacy and personal data security. Government reactions to such technologies may lead to stricter regulations in the fields of AI and image processing, which could, in turn, shape the development of similar tools in the future. The incident underscores the tension between rapid AI innovation and the need for responsible safeguards.
