Ukraine Restricts Access to YouTube Channels Linked to Russian War Supporters
YouTube has limited access within Ukraine to 31 channels connected to Russian entertainers, cultural figures, and propagandists endorsing Russia's military aggression against Ukraine. This update was provided by the Center for Countering Disinformation. Most of the blocked channels belong to Russian musicians and cultural representatives who openly back the war and participate in propaganda events promoting Russia's actions.
Notable Channels Included in the Ban
The blocked list features prominent Russian artists such as:
- Philipp Kirkorov
- Grigory Leps
- Sergey Lazarev
- Valeriya
- Larisa Dolina
- Irina Allegrova
- The band 'Pelageya'
- Denis Maidanov
- Yulia Chicherina
- Anna Netrebko
- Vasily Gerello
In addition, YouTube has blocked channels operated by sanctioned companies like 'Kaspersky Russia,' which were used to spread pro-Russian propaganda, glorify war criminals, and support Russia's armed aggression against Ukraine. Singers such as Ani Lorak, Taisia Povaliy, Anna Sedokova, and Regina Todorenko have also been identified as collaborators subject to sanctions by Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council.
These restrictions form part of Ukraine's broader strategy to combat disinformation and propaganda originating from Russia, underscoring the country's firm stance on protecting its information environment amid ongoing hostilities.
"The blocking of these channels marks an intensified Ukrainian effort against Russian propaganda, a critical front in the information war," stated the Center for Countering Disinformation.
This move highlights Ukrainian authorities' commitment to safeguarding information security by preventing the spread of content that could fuel aggression or misinformation. Such measures are expected to have lasting effects on the cultural and media landscape in Ukraine, fostering a more media-literate public aware of content origins and intentions.
