Expansion of the 'Affordable Medicines' Initiative

Starting July 1, 2026, Ukraine's 'Affordable Medicines' program will broaden its scope to include all active substances available in the country for treating cardiovascular diseases. This move aims to improve treatment access, as heart-related conditions account for roughly 60% of all deaths in Ukraine. Each year, over 800,000 people are diagnosed with ischemic heart disease, and nearly 50,000 suffer heart attacks. The program currently serves 6.18 million Ukrainians and operates through 17,348 pharmacies nationwide.

New Medications and Their Impact

The initiative now lists 748 pharmaceutical items, with cardiovascular drugs seeing the highest demand. In the second half of 2026, the program will incorporate medications for all active substances used in outpatient care available in Ukraine. The government has approved a resolution to add five new active compounds, which are used to treat type 2 diabetes, heart failure, and prevent thromboembolic complications such as strokes and other clot-related conditions.

Cardiovascular diseases cause about 60% of deaths in Ukraine. Each year, over 800,000 people are diagnosed with ischemic heart disease, and nearly 50,000 suffer heart attacks. A significant portion of these cases could be prevented with regular treatment and monitoring.

Yulia Svyrydenko

She further emphasized the need for accessible care: 'The program already includes 748 items, with the greatest demand for cardiovascular drugs. For many patients, this is daily treatment, so it is crucial that it remains accessible and free of charge.' Yulia Svyrydenko instructed the Ministry of Health to hold consultations with the market and prepare a plan to launch the new additions to the program.

This expansion marks a key step in Ukraine's fight against cardiovascular diseases, which remain a leading cause of mortality. Increasing the range of available medications will help ease the burden on the healthcare system and improve quality of life for patients requiring ongoing treatment. The government's initiative also reflects a commitment to enhancing medical support for the population and boosting the effectiveness of disease prevention efforts.

As the 'Affordable Medicines' program continues to evolve, it's essential to explore the recent additions of new drug types that aim to further enhance healthcare accessibility. This expansion not only signifies progress in addressing chronic conditions but also illustrates the government's commitment to improving public health.
